Our Best Yet Playdough Recipe

Making playdough can be hard work for the arms. So I typically make small batches and then mix them together afterwards. This recipe makes 1 batch. I recommend making at least two batches of the same colour to have enough to play with.

"Go big [batches] or go home", is my motto for playdough.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup salt
  • 4 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 Tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • Food colouring (If you use Robertson's food colouring, add at least half a teaspoon of colour. If you use powder colouring, the colour tends to be deeper)

Method:

I cook my playdough over the gas stove in a deep pot.

Add the water to the pot, turn on the heat. While the water is still cool, add the vegetable oil and food colouring and stir it a little.

Directly after that, add the flour, salt, and cream of tartar. Stir to blend the ingredients. It may appear lumpy now, but don't despair, keep stirring.

When it becomes a sticky dough, flip it over a few times to ensure all sides of the blob get warmed. Be careful not to create crustiness on the bottom of the dough. Once all sides have had a chance on the bottom of the pot and most of the stickiness is gone, flop out the dough onto the counter.

Be careful, this dough is hot. But, you need to knead the dough as soon as it has cooled a bit to be touched. Knead the dough until it is smooth. Wrap in clingwrap to keep the moisture in and allow the dough to bind.

Once the dough is completely cooled, you can remove the clingwrap. Store in a sealable tub.

Happy cooking!
